What is included in the price of the ГТП?
The technical inspection is not just a quick glance under the bonnet. It includes a full check of all the systems related to road safety. The whole process takes 20-40 minutes.

Why did the ГТП get more expensive?
If you remember, a few years ago the inspection cost 40-50 BGN. Why is it double now? There are several reasons, and it is not just inflation.

Since 2024 every station has been required to operate cameras and send data in real time to the Executive Agency "Automobile Administration". That means expensive equipment, software and maintenance, which the stations pass on to customers.
For comparison, the minimum wage has grown from 460 BGN (2017) to 1077 BGN (2026), an increase of 134%. Inflation for 2017-2024 is around 44%. The rise in the price of the ГТП in fact follows economic reality.

Vehicle tax (данък МПС) is still required for the ГТП
With Constitutional Court Decision No. 15/2025 (of 19 February 2026), the ban on the ГТП for unpaid traffic police (КАТ) fines was abolished. But paid vehicle tax remains a mandatory condition: the stations check it automatically and will refuse the inspection if the tax is unpaid.

Don’t worry too much. If the car does not pass the first time, you get a notice listing the specific faults and a deadline for a repeat inspection.

Fines for driving without a ГТП
Driving without a valid technical inspection is an offence under the Road Traffic Act (ЗДвП). The fines are not symbolic, and for a repeat offence your car can be stopped.

First offence: a fine of 50 to 200 BGN. Repeat offence: forced removal of the vehicle from traffic under Art. 171, item 2 of the ЗДвП. There is no grace period after the inspection expires.

You can’t change the price of the inspection itself much, but you can avoid extra costs from repeat visits and wasted time.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the inspection itself take?
The technical check itself takes 20-40 minutes. Waiting in a queue can, however, add from 15 minutes to an hour, especially at busy stations. Some stations offer appointments, which saves waiting.
Can I pass the ГТП without compulsory third-party liability insurance?
No. Valid compulsory third-party liability insurance (Гражданска отговорност) is a mandatory condition for being admitted to the inspection. If your insurance has expired, renew it first.
Can I choose a different station for the re-inspection?
Yes, you have the right to go for the re-inspection at any licensed station, not only the one where you received the notice.
New car: when is the first ГТП?
New passenger cars take their first inspection 4 years after first registration, then every 2 years until they are 10 years old, and annually after that. For goods vehicles and buses the inspection is annual from the first day. See the full table of ГТП validity by type of vehicle.
How often a passenger car needs the ГТП
0-4 years: no inspection. 4-10 years: every 2 years. Over 10 years: every year. Check the date in the car’s registration certificate (part I).
