How to check a Bulgarian company before you sign a contract

Start from the UIC (ЕИК), then check who can sign and what has been agreed. The check helps you avoid confusing companies with similar names.

  1. Get the UIC from the document

Find the UIC (ЕИК, the nine-digit company number) in the contract, the offer or the invoice. Compare it with the official company record. More than one company can use a similar trade name.

  2. Check who can sign

Open the current record in the Commercial Register. Look at the names and the full way the company is represented. If someone signs under a power of attorney, ask for it and check exactly what it allows.

  3. Open the entries and the documents

Check the date of the record and the documents attached at the official source. The registered capital does not show turnover, profit, or whether the company will perform the contract.

  4. Check the VAT status separately

The published VAT bulletin of the National Revenue Agency (НАП) has its own date and can list deregistered companies too. For a specific deal, use НАП's own official check for that date.

  5. Look at the deal itself

Check the subject, the price, the deadlines, the payment and how you will prove it was performed. Keep the contract, the correspondence and the payment records. If there is a dispute, describe the facts and the dates, and do not draw conclusions from the company check alone.
