How is sick pay calculated?
For a general illness, the employer pays the first 2 working days at 70% of the average daily gross pay. From the 3rd working day onwards, the benefit is paid by the NSSI at 80% of the average daily insurable income for the last 18 calendar months.
For a workplace accident or an occupational disease, the NSSI pays 90% of the average daily insurable income from the first day of sick leave, without any contribution from the employer.
The average daily insurable income is calculated by dividing the monthly salary by the average number of working days in the month (21 days). The benefit cannot be lower than BGN 18.00/day or higher than BGN 107.10/day (2026 Social Insurance Budget Act).
