How is maternity pay calculated?

The pregnancy and childbirth benefit is calculated on the basis of 90% of the average daily insurable income for the last 24 calendar months before the leave starts. The total period paid is 410 calendar days, of which 45 days before the expected date of birth.

The daily benefit cannot be lower than BGN 18.00 or higher than BGN 107.10 (2026 Social Insurance Budget Act). It also cannot exceed the average daily net pay for the same 24-month period.

After the 410 days end, the mother is entitled to a childcare benefit until the child turns 2, of BGN 900 a month (2026 Social Insurance Budget Act). If the mother returns to work after the child turns 6 months old, she gets 75% of the benefit for the rest of the 410 days.
