How to check your local taxes and fees in Bulgaria online with your personal ID number (EGN): all the ways, payment deadlines and the 5% discount for 2026.

Have you received a notice about local taxes you owe, or do you simply want to check that your property and your car are in order? You do not need to go to the municipality and queue at a counter.

The check takes about two minutes and is done online with your personal identification number (ЕГН, Bulgaria’s ten-digit personal number). Below you will find all the ways to check, what exactly local taxes and fees include, the payment deadlines, the 5 per cent discount and what happens if you do not pay on time.

❓How do I check my local taxes and fees by ЕГН?

✅You have four ways. Online through the single portal egov.bg, which brings together almost all municipalities. Through the website of your municipality (for example szp.sofia.bg for Sofia). Through ePay.bg or EasyPay. Or at the municipality’s cash desk. All you need is your ЕГН, and for some portals a PIK (personal identification code, ПИК) or a QES (qualified electronic signature, КЕП).

Local taxes are not with the NRA

Local taxes and fees are collected by your municipality, not by the National Revenue Agency (НАП). That is why you will not see them in the report on portal.nra.bg. Check them through the municipality’s portal or through egov.bg. If you are looking for your national taxes and contributions (personal income tax, pension and health contributions), see the separate check of obligations with the NRA.

What local taxes and fees include

The general name “local taxes and fees” usually covers three different obligations. It helps to know which is which, because they are calculated differently and sometimes have different deadlines.

ObligationWhat it applies toWho owes it
Tax on real estate (building tax, данък сгради)Homes, garages, plots and other propertiesThe owner of the property
Household waste fee (такса смет)The waste collection and cleaning service for the propertyThe owner or the user of the property
Vehicle tax (данък МПС)Registered cars, motorcycles and so onThe owner of the vehicle

The three main local obligations under the Local Taxes and Fees Act (ЗМДТ)

The actual amounts differ for each municipality and depend on the tax assessment value of the property, the engine power of the car and the local rates. That is why there is no universal calculation: the check by ЕГН shows your exact figures.

Ways to check by ЕГН

You have several channels for the check. Choose the one that suits you best, the result is the same.

Payment deadlines and the 5 per cent discount

For building tax and vehicle tax the law sets clear deadlines. If you pay the whole annual amount early, you get a discount.

by 30 April

deadline for paying the whole year in advance with a 5% discount

After 30 April the discount lapses, but you can pay in two instalments without a surcharge.

Deadlines for building tax and vehicle tax

By 30 April

Pay the whole annual amount and you get a 5% discount

First instalment by 30 June

Half of the amount due, if you have not paid in advance

Second instalment by 31 October

The remaining half of the annual tax

Here is how the discount works in practice for an annual tax of BGN 200.

Example of the discount for paying in advance

Annual tax (example)

BGN 200

5% discount for payment by 30 April

-BGN 10

Total

BGN 190

The figures are illustrative. The actual amount depends on the tax assessment value and the local rates.

The household waste fee has its own deadlines

The deadlines of 30 June and 31 October apply to building tax and vehicle tax. The household waste fee is paid in the order set by the municipal council of each municipality (Art. 69(1) ЗМДТ). That means your municipality may have set different deadlines for the waste fee, so check its website.

What happens if you do not pay on time

An unpaid local tax does not go away. It accrues interest and at some point the municipality can move to enforced collection.

Consequences of late payment

Interest for delay is charged on the overdue amount under the Act on Interest on Taxes, Fees and Other Similar State Receivables. If you continue not to pay, the debt is collected by force, by a public enforcement agent (публичен изпълнител) under the Tax and Social Security Procedure Code (ДОПК) or by a private bailiff (ЧСИ) under the Code of Civil Procedure (ГПК). Your bank accounts or property can be attached.

That is why it is wiser to pay even a little late than to wait. The longer the debt stands, the more interest and costs build up.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a PIK or a QES, or is the ЕГН enough?

It depends on the channel. Some municipal portals show your obligations against your ЕГН and the account number of the property alone. For the single portal egov.bg and for a full personal report you usually need a PIK from the municipality or a QES.

Can I check another person’s taxes?

For a report under someone else’s ЕГН you need an express power of attorney. You can, however, pay a third person’s obligation if you know their details: some portals and banking apps allow payment on behalf of another person.

I sold the property or the car, why do I still have a tax?

The tax is owed for the period in which you were the owner. Make sure the change has been recorded at the municipality, and check that there is no remaining obligation from before the transfer. For properties, see also the property register report.
