Check your Bulgarian health insurance status by ЕГН for free, see whether your rights are active or interrupted, and how to restore them.
You go to the doctor or are admitted to hospital, and at the desk you learn that your health insurance status is “interrupted”. At that moment treatment that should have been free suddenly comes out of your own pocket.
The good news: the check takes less than two minutes, needs only your personal identification number (ЕГН) and is completely free. Here is how to check your status and, if it is interrupted, how to restore it.

Ways to check your health insurance status
There are several ways to check your status. The fastest is the NRA online portal, which needs nothing more than your ЕГН.
| Method | What you need | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| NRA online portal | Only your ЕГН and date of birth | A quick check of whether your status is active |
| With an NRA personal identification code (ПИК) | Your personal identification code (ПИК) | A detailed report showing which months have not been paid |
| Phone 0700 18 700 | Your ЕГН, a call to the NRA | If you prefer to ask a person directly |
| At the counter of an NRA office | Your ID card | When you need a document or assistance |
NRA information line: 0700 18 700. The online check is free and anonymous.
For an ordinary check the portal is enough. If you see that your status is interrupted and you want to know exactly which months are missing, sign in with your ПИК.

Important: the status is maintained by the NRA, not by the НЗОК
Many people look for their status on the website of the National Health Insurance Fund (НЗОК) and cannot find it. The reason is simple: the National Revenue Agency (НАП) collects the health contributions and calculates the status, while the НЗОК pays for the treatment. That is why the check is always in the NRA portal.

Active versus interrupted rights: what it means
The result of the check is one of two statuses. The difference for your wallet is huge.
| Active (uninterrupted) rights | Interrupted rights | |
|---|---|---|
| Right to treatment under the НЗОК | Yes, covered | No, you pay the full price |
| GP and specialist | Free with a referral | You pay for the appointment yourself |
| Tests and hospital | Covered by the НЗОК | At your own expense |
| How it looks in the report | “Uninterrupted rights” | “Interrupted rights” + a list of months |
With interrupted rights you still owe the contributions, but you lose the coverage.
When rights are interrupted: the rule of more than three contributions
Rights are not lost because of one missed contribution. The law is specific: you lose them when you have not paid more than three monthly contributions that fell due within a period of 36 months.
more than 3
unpaid monthly contributions within 36 months interrupt your rights

Note the word “more”. Exactly three missed contributions do not interrupt your rights; the interruption starts from the fourth. The count covers the last 36 months before the month of treatment.
Health Insurance Act (ЗЗО)
Art. 109(1)
Official Bulgarian text
„Здравноосигурителните права на лицата, които са длъжни да внасят осигурителни вноски за своя сметка, се прекъсват, в случай че лицата не са внесли повече от три дължими месечни осигурителни вноски за период от 36 месеца до началото на месеца, предхождащ месеца на оказаната медицинска помощ, като лицата с прекъснати здравноосигурителни права заплащат оказаната им медицинска помощ.“

Consequences of an interrupted status
While your status is interrupted, you are in practice uninsured, even though you are obliged to pay contributions.
What you lose when rights are interrupted
- You pay the full price at the GP, the specialist and in hospital.
- Referrals and tests are not covered by the НЗОК.
- You may have a problem getting certain documents linked to your health status.
- Your debt to the NRA keeps growing until you pay and restore your rights.
How to restore your rights
Restoring them is entirely in your hands and needs no application or approval. You pay the contributions due and the rights come back.
Steps to restore your rights
Sign in with your ПИК at portal.nra.bg to see the exact list of unpaid contributions.
Pay all the contributions due
The law requires you to pay what is due for the last 60 months (Art. 109(2) ЗЗО).
Rights are restored from the date of payment
Immediately after payment you are again entitled to treatment under the НЗОК.
The health contribution for 2026 is 8% of the insurable income. How much you pay per month depends on your category.
Monthly health contribution for 2026
Person without income (Art. 40(5) ЗЗО)
8% of the minimum income of €275.33
€22.03 (BGN 43.09)
Self-insured person
8% of the minimum income of €550.66
€44.05 (BGN 86.16)
Total
depends on the number of missed months (up to 60)
The amounts are minimums and apply for 2026, retained by the extension law (State Gazette issue 113/2025) until the new budget is adopted. Fixed rate: €1 = BGN 1.95583. To restore your rights you pay all the months due, up to 60. Note: what you paid for treatment during the interruption is not refunded (Art. 109(3) ЗЗО).
What you paid during the interruption is not refunded
Who has to pay contributions themselves
If you work on an employment contract, your employer withholds and pays your contributions. But some categories of people must insure themselves, and they are the ones who most often end up with interrupted rights.
People who pay health contributions themselves
If you are in one of these categories, check your status every month.
Unemployed people without benefit from the Labour Office (Бюро по труда)
If you are not registered or the benefit has run out
Self-insured people
Freelance professions, managers, farmers
Students over a certain age
When they are no longer insured at the state’s expense
Bulgarians abroad who have not submitted an application
If you have not declared residence outside the country (Art. 40а ЗЗО)
If you are a Bulgarian citizen living abroad for more than 183 days a year, you may be exempt from paying contributions for that period, but only after submitting an application to the NRA in advance (Art. 40a ЗЗО). Without an application the contributions keep accruing and your status may be interrupted while you are abroad.
