What the result means
After the check you will see one of two messages. Here is what each one means.

The health insurance contribution is 8% of the insurable income. How it is split depends on your employment status.

What to do if your health rights are interrupted

Who pays health insurance contributions
Not everyone pays their own health insurance. In many cases the state or the employer takes over the contributions.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a limitation period for unpaid health insurance contributions?
Yes. Unpaid health insurance contributions have a limitation period of 5 years under ДОПК Art. 171(1), with an absolute limitation period of 10 years. An important clarification: the limitation period applies to the NRA’s collection of the debt, but your health insurance rights remain interrupted. To restore them, you must pay the contributions for the last 60 months, regardless of the limitation period.
Can I check another person’s contributions?
Yes. The NRA report requires only an ЕГН and a date of birth, so technically you can check for anyone whose details you know. There is no restriction on access.
How many months of unpaid contributions interrupt the rights?
More than three, that is, at least 4. The rights are interrupted when more than 3 personal monthly contributions are unpaid within 36 months: the period is counted up to the start of the month before the month in which you received medical care. What matters is which of those months you owed personally: if an employer has not paid in your contributions, that does not interrupt your rights. See Art. 109 of the Health Insurance Act (ЗЗО).
What penalties are there for unpaid contributions?
For individuals the fine is from BGN 500 to BGN 1,000, and for a repeat violation from BGN 1,000 to BGN 3,000. For employers who do not pay in contributions for their employees, the fine is from BGN 2,000 to BGN 4,000 per person.
Who pays health insurance contributions for students?
The state pays for full-time students up to the age of 26. Part-time students who have no employment contract must insure themselves as unemployed persons. Read more in our guide to health insurance for the unemployed.
