You receive a summons (призовка) with a case number and a hearing date. Or you hear from an acquaintance that “there is a case against you”. Or you simply want to see what the court decided in your neighbour’s case about the shared roof. In all three situations the first thing you do is look for a “case lookup” (справка по дело).
Here is the honest answer before anything else: a lookup of someone else’s case by ЕГН (the Bulgarian personal identification number) or by name does not exist. Since April 2018 the case lookup portals have removed search by the name of a party to protect personal data, and the public part of ЕПЕП has no such field. What works is three different portals that answer three different questions. If you mix them up, you will search for hours for something that takes two minutes in the right place.
❓How do you look up a court case?
Three portals, three different questions
The word “lookup” hides three different needs. One is to follow the progress of a specific case whose number you know. The second is to read what the court decided, including in other people’s cases. The third is to see all the documents in your own case without going to the court registry (деловодство). Each has its own place.
| ЕПЕП (ecase.justice.bg) | The court's website | Register of court acts (legalacts.justice.bg) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The question it answers | What is happening in a case whose court, number and year I know | The same, but only for that court; at some courts also older cases | What the court decided; search in the text of the acts |
| Who can ask | Anyone for the public data; the parties for the full file | Anyone | Anyone |
| Search by | Court, type of case, number, year, incoming number, act number | Case number and year, act number | Court, number, year, judge, type and status of the act, keywords, ECLI number |
| Search by name or ЕГН | No | No (search by name was suspended in 2018) | No; the acts are anonymised |
| Price | Free | Free | Free |
| What you get | Case details, hearings, related cases, acts and reasons with personal data redacted; for the parties, also the scanned documents | The progress of the case and the acts issued | The full text of the act with names redacted |
The three places complement each other. ЕПЕП is the entry point for all courts, the court's website is a fallback, and the register of acts is for reading decisions.
The Unified Portal is established by the Judiciary Act (ЗСВ). It is not a private website but a system that the Supreme Judicial Council (ВСС) is obliged to maintain.

Way 1: a lookup in ЕПЕП without registration
This is the fastest route when you know the case number. The number is in the summons, in the notice from the court or in the document you filed. Every case has a number and a year, and the court is the one that opened it.
A case lookup in ЕПЕП, step by step
The search form is in the public part of the portal. You do not need a profile, an electronic signature or a password.
Choose the court
The drop-down menu contains all the courts in the country: district, regional, administrative, appellate and supreme. If you are not sure, look at the summons: the court is written at the top of it.
Choose the type of case
Civil, criminal, administrative, matrimonial, commercial or private. If you do not know the type, leave “All” (Всички) and search only by number and year.
Enter the case number and year
Type only the digits of the number, without the letters for the type of case. The year is the one in which the case was opened, not the year of the hearing.
Open the result
You see the details of the case, the scheduled and held hearings, the related cases in other instances and the acts issued. Personal data in the acts is redacted.
If you only have the incoming number of the document with which the case started, the portal also searches by it. The field is called “Incoming number” (Входящ номер) and is under the case number. The same applies to the number of a related case from another instance.
What you see without registration
The public part of ЕПЕП, according to the portal's own list
Case details
Information about the hearings
Related cases in other instances
The acts issued: judgments, rulings, orders
The content of the acts and the reasons, with personal data redacted
There is no search by name, and that is to protect personal data
The public part of ЕПЕП has no field for a name or an ЕГН. The Sofia City Court explains on its website that search by the name of a party has been suspended since 23 April 2018 because of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 on the protection of personal data. The same is stated by the old Portal for Access to Court Cases of the САС case management system, which many courts used: the “Lookup by person” (Справка за лице) section was removed from the same date. If a website promises you a “case check by ЕГН” for any person, it has no source for that data.
Way 2: a lookup on the court’s website
Every court has its own page at an address of the form “name-of-the-court.justice.bg”, linked to ЕПЕП. In the menu “Information on cases” (Информация за дела) or “Case lookups” (Справки по дела) there is the same lookup, but only for the cases of that court.
This is also where the difference that matters for older cases lies. Some courts keep on their websites lookups from the old case management systems, from before the Unified Court Information System (ЕИСС). If you are looking for an older case, handled in the court’s previous case management system, and ЕПЕП does not find it, try the court’s website.
Example: Sofia District Court and Sofia City Court
Sofia District Court: “Case lookups” (Справки по дела)
From the home page of srs.justice.bg choose “Information on cases”, then “Case lookups”. There are three entries: lookups of cases in АСУД (the old case management system), in ЕИСС and in ЕПЕП. You search by case number and year.
Sofia City Court: current and concluded cases
The Sofia City Court (СГС) splits the lookup in two: “Lookups of current cases” and “Lookup of concluded cases”. For concluded cases you enter the type of case, the number and the year, or the act number and the year. A portal without registration since 18 November 2016.
Open the court's website from the list in ЕПЕП and look for “Information on cases”. The structure is similar at all courts, because the websites are built to one model by the Supreme Judicial Council.
Providing information on how to make a lookup and how to file documents electronically is a duty of the court, not a courtesy.

Way 3: reading decisions in the register of court acts
If your question is not “what is happening in my case” but “how do courts decide cases like this”, the place is the register of court acts at legalacts.justice.bg. It searches the text of the acts themselves, by keywords, by judge, by the type and status of the act and by ECLI number, the European identifier for court decisions.
Publishing the acts is a duty of every court, and access is free for everyone. The names in the acts are redacted.

Two groups of acts will be missing, and this is not a fault of the system. Sentences by which the defendant is sentenced to serve a penalty are published only after the prosecutor notifies the court that steps have been taken to enforce them. Acts in cases on the civil or health status of people, for example on parentage, adoption or placing under guardianship, are published without their reasons.

The full electronic file: only for the parties to the case
The public lookup shows the outline of the case, but not the documents in it. The statement of claim, the response, the evidence, the minutes of the hearings and the notices are in the electronic case file, to which only the parties and their representatives have access.

How to get access to your own case in ЕПЕП
You enter your full name, your ЕГН or ЛНЧ (the personal number issued to foreigners) and your email. You confirm with a qualified electronic signature (КЕП) issued for the same ЕГН. There is only one profile per ЕГН.
Submit an application for access to the case
From the “Court cases” menu in your profile you choose the case in which you are a party and submit an application for access to the case. In it you also state expressly whether you want electronic summoning. The application is signed with a КЕП. Electronic application works for cases opened in ЕИСС; for older cases, ask the court.
Wait for the court's approval
The court checks that you really are a party and grants the access. The case then appears in “My cases” (Моите дела) with all the scanned documents, minutes and notices.
File documents and receive summonses online
Through “My cases” you file applications and objections signed with a КЕП, and pay court fees by bank card through a virtual POS terminal.
What is unlocked with access as a party
The additional data when you log in with a user profile, according to the ЕПЕП list
The parties to the case
The scanned documents: statement of claim, response, evidence
The minutes of the court hearings
The records of the random allocation of the case
The notices and summonses, if you have asked for electronic service
The acts and reasons with personal data not redacted
Identification with a КЕП is not a whim of the portal. The Code requires that electronic statements to the court come from an identified person.
Civil Procedure Code (ГПК)
Art. 102ж(1)
Official Bulgarian text
„Идентификацията на лицата, подаващи електронни изявления, се извършва по реда на Закона за електронната идентификация или чрез средствата за електронна идентификация, издадени в друга държава членка, които отговарят на условията по чл. 6, параграф 1 от Регламент (ЕС) № 910/2014.“
Acting through ЕПЕП means receiving summonses through ЕПЕП
When you take a procedural step through the portal, for example file an application in the case, the law takes it that you agree to receive notices, summonses and papers electronically before all instances. The consent can be withdrawn at any time. The application for access to the case itself asks you expressly whether you want electronic summoning, and the notices are visible in the profile only if you asked for it. The notice is deemed served on the day you download it, and if you do not download it within 7 days, on the first day after that period. Check your profile and your email regularly, because the time limit for appeal runs from service.

Art. 38а(4)

Art. 41а(1)
Official Bulgarian text
„Когато връчването се извършва по чл. 38, ал. 2, съобщението, съдържащо информация за изтегляне на призовката, съобщението или книжата, се смята за връчено в деня на изтеглянето му от адресата. В случай че съобщението не бъде изтеглено в 7-дневен срок от неговото изпращане, то се смята за връчено в първия ден след изтичането на срока за изтегляне.“
7 days
from the sending of the electronic notice through ЕПЕП
A notice that has not been downloaded is deemed served on the first day after the seventh. From that day the time limits for responding and for appeal run.
“Is there a case against me?”: what can really be checked
This is the most common question and it has the most inconvenient answer. There is no public register in which you enter your ЕГН and see all the cases against you. Not in the courts. Here is what works instead.
Four places that answer in parts
None of them is a universal lookup by ЕГН
Your own post and your door
The court must serve the summons or notice on you at the address given in the case. If it cannot find you, it sticks a notice on the door or the letterbox.
The court registry with an ID card
As a party to a case you have the right to a lookup on the spot. If you suspect a particular court, for example the district court for your address, ask there.
The register of debtors at the private enforcement agent (ЧСИ)
It answers only for enforcement cases with a private enforcement agent, that is, when there is already a court act against you. A paid lookup, received on paper.
The criminal record certificate
It shows only sentences that have entered into force, not pending cases. It is not a case lookup.
The most important is the first. If you are a defendant and nobody finds you at the address, the court does not stop. It sticks up a notice and starts counting. The Code requires the process server to have come at least three times within the month, with at least a week between the visits and at least once on a non-working day, unless they have gathered evidence that you do not live at the address.
Civil Procedure Code (ГПК)
Art. 47(1)
Official Bulgarian text
„Когато ответникът в продължение на един месец не може да бъде намерен на посочения по делото адрес и не се намери лице, което е съгласно да получи съобщението, връчителят залепва уведомление на вратата или на пощенската кутия, а когато до тях не е осигурен достъп - на входната врата или на видно място около нея.“
Civil Procedure Code (ГПК)
Art. 47(2)
Official Bulgarian text
„В уведомлението се посочва, че книжата са оставени в канцеларията на съда, когато връчването става чрез служител на съда или частен съдебен изпълнител, съответно в общината, когато връчването става чрез неин служител, както и че те могат да бъдат получени там в двуседмичен срок от залепването на уведомлението.“
2 weeks
from the sticking of the notice is what you have to collect the papers from the court's office. After that the notice is deemed served, even if you have never seen it.

Civil Procedure Code (ГПК)
Art. 47(5)
Official Bulgarian text
„Съобщението се смята за връчено с изтичането на срока за получаването му от канцеларията на съда или общината.“
The case goes on without you, with a special representative
When service in this way is regular, the court appoints a special representative (особен представител) of the defendant and the case proceeds. The judgment that results is valid against you. If you live at an address different from your permanent and current address, or are abroad, this is a real risk: the court checks the address registration and the place of work on its own initiative, but not where you actually live.
Civil Procedure Code (ГПК)
Art. 47(3)
Official Bulgarian text
Civil Procedure Code (ГПК)
Art. 47(6)
Official Bulgarian text
„Когато установи редовността на връчването, съдът разпорежда съобщението да се приложи към делото и назначава особен представител на разноски на ищеца.“
The practical conclusion: if you expect a case, for example after an unpaid loan, a dispute with a neighbour or the division of a property, keep your current address up to date and check your letterbox. The notice on the door is a small white slip that is easily torn off.
How to read the case number from the summons
The full designation of a case looks like this: “гр. д. № 12345/2026 г. по описа на Софийски районен съд, 45 състав” (civil case No. 12345/2026 of the Sofia District Court, panel 45). For the lookup you need three of these elements.
The three things you look for in the summons
With these, the lookup in ЕПЕП takes under a minute
The court hearing the case
It is written at the very top of the summons. Be careful: the district court and the city court in Sofia are two different courts.
The case number
The digits after “№”. The letters before it (гр. д., н. о. х. д., ч. д.) are the type of case.
The year of opening
The digits after the slash. It is not the year of the hearing.
The panel number
Not needed for the lookup, but useful when you phone the court registry.
The abbreviations for the types of case are the same in all courts: “гр. д.” is a civil case, “ч. гр. д.” is a private civil case, usually order for payment proceedings over a debt, “т. д.” is commercial, “адм. д.” is administrative, “н. о. х. д.” is a criminal case of a general nature, and “н. ч. х. д.” is a criminal case of a private nature, for example for insult or defamation.
What the register of acts is and why your judgment is in it
The acts that end a case before one instance or are subject to separate appeal are announced in a register of the acts of the courts, which by law is part of the unified information system of the courts. Ordinance No. 4 of 2017 of the Supreme Judicial Council describes it as a web-based database with free lookups by court, judge, year, case number and act number and by ECLI number. These are the criteria by which legalacts.justice.bg also searches.
Judiciary Act (ЗСВ)
Art. 360н(1)
Official Bulgarian text
„Регистърът на актовете на съдилищата, наричан по-нататък "регистърът", е електронна база данни, съдържаща актовете, които слагат край на производството пред съответната инстанция или подлежат на самостоятелно обжалване.“

Art. 28(1)
Official Bulgarian text
„Всеки може да иска и извършва справка в базата данни, съставляваща регистъра на актовете на съдилищата. Справките в регистъра са безплатни.“
For the parties to the case access is full, for everyone else it is free but with personal data redacted.
Judiciary Act (ЗСВ)
Art. 360с(1)
Official Bulgarian text
„Достъп до обявените в регистъра актове имат участниците в производството, оправомощени от тях или по закон лица.“
How to receive summonses online instead of waiting for a courier
If you are already a party to a case, the most useful thing ЕПЕП gives is not the lookup but the service of documents. You can give an electronic address for service and the court will send the notices there, instead of through a process server (призовкар).
Civil Procedure Code (ГПК)
Art. 38(2)
Official Bulgarian text
„Връчването може да се извърши на избран от страната електронен адрес за връчване чрез: 1. единния портал за електронно правосъдие;“
Besides ЕПЕП, the Code allows qualified electronic registered mail and the state’s Secure Electronic Delivery System. ЕПЕП is the route that goes together with access to the case.
The practical difference is big. The notice does not get lost, is not stuck on a door and does not depend on whether you are at home. The price is the discipline of opening your profile, because the seven days run even without you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I look up a case by ЕГН?
No. In the public part of ЕПЕП and on the courts’ websites there is no search by ЕГН or by name. You search by court, type of case, number and year. For your own cases you get full access after registering with a КЕП and an application approved by the court.
How do I find out whether there is a case against me?
There is no universal lookup. The court must serve a summons on you at the address given in the case, and if it does not find you, stick a notice on the door or the letterbox. As a party you can ask at the court registry with an ID card. For enforcement cases with a ЧСИ there is a separate register of debtors.
Is a case lookup free?
Yes, in all three places: ЕПЕП, the court’s website and the register of court acts. You pay for certified copies and certificates from the court registry, under the tariff of court fees.
Do I need an electronic signature to check a case?
Not for the public lookup. You need a КЕП only to register in ЕПЕП and to access the full file of a case in which you are a party, as well as to file documents electronically.
Why can’t I find my case in ЕПЕП?
The three most common reasons are: you chose the wrong court, for example the city court instead of the district court; you entered the year of the hearing instead of the year of opening; or the case is old and was handled in a previous case management system. In the third case, try the lookup on the court’s own website.
Can I read a judgment in someone else’s case?
Yes. The courts’ acts are published immediately after they are issued, with personal data redacted. Search the register of court acts at legalacts.justice.bg by court, number, year or keywords. The reasons are not published in cases on civil and health status, and sentences that impose a penalty are published under a separate procedure.
What is the difference between a case lookup and a lookup at a ЧСИ?
A court case is the dispute before the court. An enforcement case with a ЧСИ starts after there is already a court act or an order for enforcement and is conducted in the enforcement agent’s office, not in the court. For it, the lookup is in the Register of Debtors of the Chamber of Private Enforcement Agents and in the ИССИ system of the Ministry of Justice.
